Dresden Flats
Year: 2013 - 2024
Gross Floor Area: 3,403 m²
Location: Dresden, Germany
Located in Dresden, Germany, this early-twentieth-century building sits within a mature urban neighborhood characterized by generous green surroundings. Despite its age and the transformations it underwent over time, the structure preserved much of its original character, calling for an intervention that balanced preservation with adaptation to a new multifamily program.
Rather than introducing a radical break with the past, the project focused on extending the building’s narrative into the present. The design sought to upgrade comfort, performance and spatial organization while maintaining the legibility of the existing architecture. Key historical elements were restored or carefully reconstructed, and new additions were introduced discreetly to ensure harmony between old and new.
Interior spaces were reorganized to accommodate multiple residential units, improving light, circulation and comfort without erasing the building’s identity. Through a measured and respectful approach, the project revitalizes the house for contemporary living while preserving its historical presence within the Dresden urban landscape.
